As you have probably gathered by now, I have a preference for restaurants/cafes/bars which are independent. It's not that I don't eat/drink/go to chains, but I rarely think there is much of note to blog about. There are, however, an increasing number of not-quite-chains-but-have-more-than-one-outlet (is there a name for this?). Anyway, we visited one such establishment for lunch one Saturday, the increasingly popular Ping Pong Dim Sum restaurant. We went to one one in Soho, but I think there are a couple of others. The concept is simple, traditional dim sum in a sleek, trendy, sophisticated restaurant setting. The subtle lighting, the fashionable decor and the smart staff create a very relaxing and really quite special atmosphere. We were seated at the bar, which is a large semi-circle facing into the food preparation area.
What is also special is the whole format. Well, I say special, what I mean is they have adopted the traditional format of a Dim Sum place (well, to an extent). A normal menu gives details of all the dishes, and a separate long, two sided order card allows you to cross off the ones you would like to order. This is then taken from you at the bar, the order processed, and the card returned to you. As each item comes, it is crossed off the card. You can then add things as you go if you want to. I have to say, I think this is a really sociable, convenient and easy way of having a lunch or bite to eat, as you just keep going until you want no more. I would, however, say it is probably easy to get carried away and spend more on lunch than you intend!
