Los Angeles Stories

Continuing what seems to be a sub-conscious fixation on all things American, a quick note on my last read. A collection of short stories by Ry Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club, etc, general musical legend) about life in 1940/50s Los Angeles.

Giving an insight into life in LA before its global reputation for bright lights, shiny cars, glamorous lifestyles and A listers. Anyone who has visited this vast city will be captivated by the descriptions of Venice and Santa Monica. Expect plenty of guns, cars, and music. Cooder develops strong characters enabling stories of no more than twenty pages to be just as gripping and substantial as an entire novel itself. On the Jubilee Line heading to Waterloo everyday I was transported to downtown LA in the back seat of a Cadillac listening to Billy Holiday.
The book, however, was only published in America, so had to get it sent over. Worth it though!
