The Last Weekend, Blake Morrison

At the beginning of this week, with the looming tube strike and the inevitable prospect of not being able to sit down and read my book on the tube to work, I worked hard at finishing off my current literary installment. Luckily, I was enjoying it, otherwise trying to finish it quickly is a bit too much effort.

The Last Weekend is a book I have been meaning to read for a while. I acquired it some time ago whilst working at the bookshop, it's dust jacket missing and in no state to sell. It was popular for a very short period as it had been adapted for ITV (with Rupert Penry-Jones maybe?). I have had it sitting on my shelf for ages and, unfortunately, without a dust cover had not attracted my attention. It tells the story of a couple who are invited away for August bank holiday to stay with some old friends in the country. The majority of the book takes places over just the four days of the trip, which turns out to be rather eventful. It is well written and not necessarily as predictable as it might seem, bravely addressing the fragility of friendship head on.
