The Grand Budapest Hotel

There is a fine line between pretentious film making and absurd to the point to entertainment. Wes Anderson, for me, is a fantastic film maker, but tends to oscillate between the two. Moonrise Kingdom, for example, was a perfectly entertaining film, but left me with the sour taste of pretense. Anderson's latest film, however, sits firmly in the realms of the downright bizarre - and therefore the undeniably entertaining. Ralph Fiennes plays the fantastic role of the reputable concierge for the Grand Budapest Hotel. The tells the retrospective story of the hotel, in its heyday, and an unexpected story which unfolds when one of the hotel's regular guests, an elderly Tilda Swinton, is suddenly murdered. The story-line, however, as with most of Anderson's films, is pretty unimportant and is not integral to the overall enjoyment of the film. The subtle humour, mesmerising visuals and spot-on performances from a surprisingly star-studded cast, makes this one of the most inspiring films I have seen in a long time. Bravo, Wes.

"You're looking so well darling, you really are. I don't know what sort of cream they put on you down at the morgue but, I want some."
