The National Portrait Gallery is currently hosting a fabulous display of the best works of photographer David Bailey. Photos range from countless black and whites of celebrities, to shots from Bailey's travels, to an incredibly revealing room of Bailey's personal family photos.
The exhibition is extremely popular- essential to book and unfortunately crowded on the inside - but rightfully so. Even if you have no awareness and/or appreciation for the photography of the genius that is David Bailey, this exhibition offers a brilliant insight into his work. Though the celebrity black and white portraits are probably the highlight, I also enjoyed the entire room devoted to Bailey's wife, including a wall covered to the ceiling in portraits of Catherine Bailey.
"It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter, because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the ordinary". David Bailey, 1984.
